Publishing With Heldref
In the early 1970's, the directors of the Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation, many of whom were academics, became increasingly aware that rising costs jeopardized the survival of many highly respected publications. To address this challenge, a publishing division was established within the Foundation, under the leadership of Evron M. Kirkpatrick, then President of the Foundation. This new group, Heldref Publications, was authorized to publish learned and professional publications, to promote them, and to make other educational organizations aware of this program. The premise was that these periodicals could be published more cost effectively as a group than as individually managed publications.
Today Heldref produces 47 publications with the assistance of hundreds of scholars and teachers who contribute their time and expertise as editors and advisors. Many of the magazines and journals published by Heldref have won Educational Press Awards. Georgetown University Library, Washington, DC, is the official archivist for Heldref Publications. The current president of the Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation is Jeane J. Kirkpatrick and the director of Heldref Publications is James S. Denton.
