Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health: An International Journal

Guidelines for Contributors

The Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health: An International Journal consolidates the latest evidence-based research—nationally and internationally—from various fields such as epidemiology, toxicology, biostatistics, and biochemistry. Publishing both original research and critical reviews, AEOH addresses topics of current concern in environmental and occupational medicine such as the health significance of toxic waste, new energy technology, industrial processes, and the environmental and occupational causation of neurobiological dysfunction, birth defects, cancer, and chronic degenerative diseases. To support diverse communication of scholarly material, the following formats are available.

Full-length Manuscripts should not exceed 24 pages (double-spaced draft text, 12-pt type), regardless of the combination of text, illustrations, and references.

Brief Communications. Pithy articles of 1500 words or less and no more than 2 illustrations will receive expeditious handling. Such communications may include critical analyses of current problems and issues.

Case Studies. AEOH will publish occasional longer case studies of 24 to 36 pages (double-spaced draft text, 12-pt type) of relevant environmental and occupational issues.

Conference Proceedings and Workshop Reports. Conference proceedings or workshop reports will be considered where the topic is timely and the event is authoritative. A report in the form of a single manuscript, comparable in length to a submitted paper, is ideal. Shorter conference proceedings will also be considered as a package, but with the caveat that the individual papers should stand on their own merits as suitable for publication. The journal reserves the right to review the proceedings to determine that all or most of the papers are of a standard that would merit publication as individual articles, were they submitted individually. Publication of proceedings may be subject to negotiations between Heldref Publications and conference sponsors.

Manuscripts reporting the results of experimental investigations on humans must include a statement to the effect that informed consent was obtained from each person after the nature of the procedure(s) had been fully explained and that an Internal Review Board (IRB) approved the research. A statement should be included that the research was completed in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration (http://www.wma.net/e/policy/b3.htm). Manuscripts reporting results of experiments on animals should also be accompanied by confirmation that an animal welfare board approved the research.

Authors should refer to patients by number or fictitious names. Real names or initials should not be used in the text, tables, or illustrations. A letter of consent must accompany all photographs of patients in which a possibility of identification exists. It is not sufficient to cover the eyes to mask identity.

Potential conflicts of interests must be reported with article submission. Potential conflicts of interest include funding sources for the study or financial interest in a device or product being investigated in the manuscript.

PROCEDURES

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the following link:http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/heldref/aeoh. Hard copy submissions will not be accepted. The author should submit 2 versions of the manuscript: one blinded copy and one copy with author names and affiliations included.

Manuscripts are reviewed with the understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by another publication and authors must include a statement to that effect in their cover letters. Accepted manuscripts may not be published elsewhere, in any form (including electronic, Internet, etc.), without permission from the publisher.

The following information should be provided for all authors: full name, institutional affiliation, current mailing address, e-mail address, telephone number, and fax number. One author should be designated as the corresponding author.

All accepted manuscripts are subjected to copyediting. The corresponding author will receive a galley proof for approval. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their published articles, including any changes made during copyediting. Each other receives free online access to the issue in which his or her article appears.

STYLE

Format. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style.

Title. Titles should be short, specific, and clear and should not exceed 75 characters, including punctuation and spaces.

Abstract.
A single-paragraph summary (not more than 135 words) of the article should be provided. The abstract should state the problem, method of study, results, and conclusions.

Measurements. All measurements should be reported in SI units. If other units are preferred, the conversion factor must be given when the measurement is first described in the text, and as a footnote in the tables. Please refer to "The SI for the Health Professions" (World Health Organization, Geneva, 1977).

Chemical names. Presentation of chemical names must follow the IUPAC convention.

Artwork. Only those illustrations that clarify and augment the text should be included. Whenever possible, an experienced medical illustrator should be employed for the preparation of all artwork.

Tables. Table notes should be indicated by standard reference marks in the series designated by the AMA Manual of Style, placed directly to the right of each item to be noted. Notes should be typed in order immediately below the table to which they apply, not on a separate sheet.
