History & Mission
In 1956, Helen Dwight Reid, a political scientist who taught at Bryn Mawr and the University of Buffalo, established a nonprofit foundation to support projects in education, international affairs, and the sciences.
In the early 1970s, the directors, many of whom were academics, became increasingly aware that rising costs jeopardized the survival of many highly respected scholarly publications. Their response, under the leadership of Professors Evron and Jeane Kirkpatrick was to establish a publishing division within the Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation. That new division, Heldref Publications, was tasked to purchase struggling publications that might prosper given the economies of scale achieved by offering single ownership.
Most of the Heldref publications were sold in 2009 to Taylor & Francis, who are committed to maintaining the high quality of scholarship Heldref established.
